CFP Rankings: Miami Debuts No. 1, Georgia Leads Betting Odds for 2026 Title

Miami has never previously occupied the top spot in a College Football Playoff ranking. On Tuesday, the unbeaten Hurricanes did exactly that, while Georgia, Utah and Indiana filled the next three places.

Georgia nevertheless leads the championship market on Kalshi. A $10 order on the Bulldogs would return around $43 if they win the title.

A historic opening top four

The first rankings, covering games through Saturday, October 31, made Miami the 11th program to reach No. 1. It is also the first ACC team to hold that position since Clemson in 2017. The Hurricanes are 8-0, with Florida State and North Carolina supplying their two closest contests.

Georgia sits second at 7-1. Its defeat by unranked, 4-4 Auburn counts against the Bulldogs, but victories over Alabama and Florida strengthen their case. Utah climbed to No. 3, two places above its previous CFP best, and owns an 8-0 record that includes a win against No. 17 Houston.

Defending champion Indiana completes the leading quartet at 8-1. The Hoosiers’ only defeat came against Ohio State, yet the committee placed the Buckeyes eight positions below them.

Ohio State’s No. 12 ranking was one of the evening’s surprises. The Buckeyes lost to Southern Cal last week but still hold that head-to-head victory over Indiana. Tennessee is next at No. 13. Under the bracket projected from this ranking, those would be the first two teams excluded.

Kentucky and Houston also reach new ground

Kentucky opens at No. 6, surpassing its earlier best of No. 9. The Wildcats are 7-1 but sit four places below Alabama, which beat them heavily in Week 2. Alabama is 6-2 and holds the head-to-head advantage.

Houston’s No. 17 position is another program high, improving on No. 18. Texas Tech begins at No. 15, one of five Big 12 selections alongside Utah, BYU, Houston and Arizona. The Red Raiders are 7-1 and have beaten Houston 28-26 and Arizona 34-26.

The SEC supplies 10 of the 25 teams, with the Big Ten contributing six. Boise State is the only ranked team from the Group of 6 conferences. At No. 25, the 7-1 Broncos currently project as the bracket’s No. 12 seed and hold the inside track for its automatic conference-champion place.

The detail that matters is that Tuesday’s order is a starting point, not a bracket fixed in stone. Since the rankings began in 2014, five teams leading the opening edition have remained first through Selection Day. Only two went on to win the championship.

How the bracket would work

This is the 73rd committee ranking. Alabama and Ohio State have appeared in every one. The playoff will contain 12 teams: the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions, the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams. Notre Dame can qualify by finishing among the top 12 in the final ranking.

Unlike the first 12-team season, the four highest-ranked teams receive the leading seeds and opening-round byes whether or not they win their conferences. Seeds five through 12 meet in first-round games hosted by the higher seed on campus.

The committee compares each team’s full body of work using video, data and conference input. When profiles are close, it considers schedule strength, head-to-head meetings, results against shared opponents and relevant circumstances such as important injuries or a coach’s absence.

Committee members convene again on November 9-10. ESPN and its app will carry the next release at approximately 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 10. Conference championship weekend precedes the final bracket on Sunday, December 6.

Las Vegas’s Allegiant Stadium hosts the national title game on Monday, January 25, 2027.
