The advertised prize is $835 million. The cash alternative in the United States is $357.9 million before taxes.
That is the choice facing an American winner in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing: take the money at once, or receive the larger advertised amount through 30 increasing payments over 29 years.
A winner would collect the game’s tenth-largest jackpot and its second-biggest prize of 2026. Only the $1.04 billion won in Illinois on Aug. 12 has been larger this year. Powerball’s record remains the $2.04 billion won in California in 2022.

A full jackpot cycle with British players
This run has lasted 35 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner, making Wednesday’s draw the 36th. It is also the first in which United Kingdom players have participated from the beginning.
Powerball expanded into Britain in July. Every ticket contributes equally to the jackpot pool, and the Multi-State Lottery Association expects the wider player base to make prizes grow faster.
That expansion does not change the price or the mathematics. A ticket still costs $2, and the chance of hitting the jackpot remains 1 in 292.2 million. The overall chance of winning any prize is 1 in 24.9.
“When the jackpot reaches this level, players take notice, and we’ve seen that excitement reflected in ticket sales over the past week,” said Stephen Durrell, Powerball Product Group Chair and Kansas Lottery Executive Director.
Different payout rules across the Atlantic
A winner playing through a participating American lottery can select the annuity or the one-time cash payment. Both figures are quoted before taxes.
The annuity starts smaller and rises annually, spreading the full advertised prize across 29 years. The lump sum is smaller because it delivers the jackpot’s present cash value immediately.
A British winner does not get that choice. The jackpot’s cash value would be transferred to the United Kingdom and paid over 30 years through The UK National Lottery.
Powerball is sold in 45 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the United Kingdom. More than half of each $2 purchase stays in the selling jurisdiction to support public programs and services. The association says the game has generated an estimated $38 billion for good causes since 1992.
Long odds, late drawing
Players must match five white balls drawn from 69 and one red Powerball drawn from 26. Some jurisdictions offer Power Play or Double Play for an additional dollar each, but neither changes the jackpot odds.
Wednesday’s drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. ET at Powerball’s Florida draw studio.
