WEST LAFAYETTE, November 4, 2026 — Purdue Football has reshaped its 2027 non-conference slate by adding a road contest at West Virginia, a strategic move driven by the upcoming 24-team College Football Playoff format and one that pauses a storied rivalry with Notre Dame.
The addition of the Mountaineers signals a calculated shift toward Power 4 scheduling requirements. Purdue and West Virginia have not met since 1996, a series that is currently tied at one win apiece. The Boilermakers won 26-24 in Morgantown in 1995, while the Mountaineers posted a 20-6 victory in West Lafayette the following year. This single-game addition forces a pause in the longstanding series against Notre Dame, which has been played on and off nearly 90 times in program history.
To meet the expanded playoff parameters, Purdue has finalized three non-conference dates for 2027. A road game at UAlbany is set for August 28, marking the first-ever meeting between the programs. The Boilermakers also host Miami (Ohio) on September 11, where Purdue holds a 9-3-1 all-time advantage. These additions complement a Big Ten conference schedule that will test the program against established Power 4 opposition.
The strategic calculus reflects a broader requirement for programs navigating the new playoff landscape, where scheduling against power conference opponents becomes a mandatory component of the regular season. For Purdue, the 2027 slate represents a deliberate realignment of non-conference priorities, balancing traditional rivalries with the logistical demands of the sport’s next era.
