Carlos Ghosn\u2019s legacy still shapes global auto industry

In a significant shift, Carlos Ghosn is no longer leading any automobile conglomerate, a reality that continues to have a profound impact on the global auto industry over four years since his sensational downfall. The man who once held the reins of Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Motors simultaneously, leaves behind a complex legacy that the industry is still grappling with. Ghosn’s professional journey commenced at Michelin in 1978, where he gained his initial insights into the business.

After a career spanning almost two decades, which included stints in South America and various promotions, he was perfectly positioned when Renault acquired a significant stake in Nissan in 1999. At that time, Nissan was grappling with financial difficulties.

Ghosn relocated to Japan to steer the company back to profitability, a task he accomplished through extensive restructuring. In 2005, Ghosn was appointed CEO of Renault, a role that saw him managing two automakers across two continents simultaneously. This dual leadership role was uncommon, requiring constant travel, quick decision-making, and relentless pressure management, which he accomplished for several years.

In 2005, Mitsubishi was also added to his portfolio. For a period, Ghosn was the most influential executive in the automotive sector, overseeing billions in revenue and tens of thousands of employees.

However, the risks inherent in such a centralized structure became apparent when Ghosn was arrested in Japan in November 2018 on charges of financial misconduct. He fled the country in 2019, using a musical instrument case as a disguise on a private jet, an escape as dramatic as it was cinematic. The aftermath, however, was far from it.

Nissan and Renault spent several years untangling their relationship, with the alliance that Ghosn had built and personally managed losing its central figure. Mitsubishi, the smallest partner, had to find its footing independently.

All three companies are still grappling with the consequences of Ghosn’s departure. The alliance exists but is weaker, with trust between the partners eroded and decision-making slowed. The stakes in Ghosn’s story are not just about one executive’s rise and fall, but about the question of how much power any single person should wield in a global industry. Ghosn’s career, spanning four decades, began at a tire plant and ended with a global manhunt.

In between, he reshaped the automotive landscape, leaving behind a legacy that is both impressive and damaging. The companies he led are still dealing with both.
