Hyundai Recalls 38,000 Cars Over Airbag Software Glitch That May Disable Safety Systems

Hyundai has issued a recall for 37,901 vehicles due to a software glitch in the airbag control unit that could disable both airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in a crash.

Recall Scope and Affected Models

The recall specifically targets 8,843 2019–2022 Veloster N models and 29,058 2019–2023 Kona Electric vehicles, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Root Cause: Software Corruption

The issue arises from a software error in the Airbag Control Unit (ACU). NHTSA documents reveal that the ACU’s data may become corrupted during a system reboot or power interruption while writing to its internal memory. This corruption can deactivate both the airbag system and seatbelt pretensioners, critical components designed to minimize injury during a collision.

Safety Risks Explained

If the ACU’s data is compromised, the airbag malfunction indicator light on the dashboard will illuminate, signaling a potential failure. As RollingOut explains, pretensioners tighten seatbelts milliseconds before impact, securing occupants in place. Their failure, combined with non-deploying airbags, could turn a survivable crash into a far more serious incident.

How Owners Can Verify Status

Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by entering its 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website starting November 6, 2026. The VIN is typically found on the driver’s side dashboard or vehicle registration documents. Hyundai customer service is also available at 1-855-371-9460 for inquiries.

Remediation Steps and Timeline

The fix involves a free software update at any authorized Hyundai dealership. Hyundai will reimburse owners for out-of-pocket expenses incurred before the recall was filed. Official notification letters are scheduled to be mailed to affected owners on January 1, 2027, though the recall was publicly announced in early November 2026.

As of October 2026, Hyundai has identified 331 incidents related to this issue, with no reported crashes, fires, or injuries. This recall is part of a broader pattern for Hyundai, which has recalled over 1.92 million vehicles in the U.S. this year, addressing issues ranging from side curtain airbags to seat belt anchorage components.
