Drivers of America's most popular truck urged to check speedometers for dangerous glitch

The defect risks leaving drivers without primary speed and engine speed readouts. The recall covers both 2025 and 2026 model-year vehicles, with heavier-duty pickups built between December 2024 and April 2026, and F-150s assembled from August 2025 to May 2026.

Recall Scope and Affected Models

The campaign, identified as 26V653 by the NHTSA and 26C46 by Ford, encompasses 102,159 trucks in total. Heavier-duty models include the F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550 and F-600, alongside the F-750 medium-duty truck. F-150 pickups are also included, built between August 22, 2025, and May 12, 2026. All affected vehicles left the factory equipped with analog gauge clusters supplied by Visteon. The modules carry a variety of part numbers, reflecting the breadth of the production run.

Nature of the Defect

According to the recall filing, the analog needles may wander erratically or stick in place without warning. This means the driver loses the primary vehicle speed and engine speed readouts. Ford notes that some trucks are equipped with a redundant digital speedometer; a discrepancy between the analog and digital displays may serve as the only warning. The Dearborn-based automaker attributes the issue to supplier process deficiencies, though the recall filing acknowledges Ford does not fully understand the root cause. Ford states the supplier addressed the problem with tool maintenance in January 2026.

Risk and Remedy

Loss of speed and engine speed information poses a safety risk, particularly in traffic or during highway driving. The recall statistics show that only 1 percent of the affected population is believed to actually contain the defect, though this still translates to over 10,000 trucks. Ford became aware of the issue in May 2026, prompted by a growing number of customer reports. By September 16, the company had logged 93 field reports and 18 warranty claims dating back to January 2025.

The remedy involves replacing the analog cluster module. Ford has validated the replacement part for proper operation, but has not announced when components will be widely available at dealerships. Owner notification letters began mailing on October 26, 2026. Remedy notification letters are expected to follow in the first two weeks of December 2026.

Dealer Preparation and Owner Notification Timeline

Ford has initiated a phased notification process to inform affected truck owners about the recall. Interim customer letters began mailing on October 26, 2026, alerting drivers to the potential gauge cluster issue. These initial communications inform owners of the defect and advise them to monitor their instrument panels for any erratic needle behavior or sticking. Ford has indicated that remedy notification letters are expected to follow within the first two weeks of December 2026, at which point owners will receive instructions on scheduling the free repair.

Dealerships are being prepared to perform the remedy, which involves the replacement of the analog cluster module. Ford has validated the replacement part for proper operation, ensuring that the new module will provide accurate speed and engine speed readouts. While the company has not announced a specific date when replacement components will be widely available at dealerships nationwide, the recall documentation confirms that the necessary parts have been identified and the repair process is ready to commence once owners respond to the notification letters.

Breakdown of Affected Trucks by Model

The recall population of 102,159 vehicles consists primarily of heavier-duty models, which account for 91,589 units. The F-250 represents the largest single group with 43,300 trucks, followed by the F-350 at 26,354 units. The F-450 and F-550 contribute 6,847 and 12,260 trucks respectively, while the F-600 adds 2,827 units. A single F-750 medium-duty truck, built on November 21, 2025, is also included in the campaign.

The remaining 10,570 vehicles are F-150 pickups. Production dates for the affected heavy- and medium-duty trucks span from December 14, 2024, through April 17, 2026, while the F-150s were assembled between August 22, 2025, and May 12, 2026.
