TALLAHASSEE, October 25, 2026 — Following 30 rollovers, the Powerball jackpot reaches $674 million as players face the game’s steep 1-in-292.2 million odds.
The Mechanics Behind the Multi-State Drawing
The Powerball jackpot climbed to a whopping $674 million for the Saturday, Oct. 24, drawing after 30 rollovers, according to source reports. The jackpot’s cash option increased to $289.1 million. Powerball lottery drawings are held and filmed in a Tallahassee, Florida, TV studio at 11 p.m. Eastern Time every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, including holidays. Powerball is overseen by the Multi-State Lottery Association, which also manages other large jackpot games such as the Mega Millions. The game is offered across 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and the United Kingdom. Each standard Powerball play costs two dollars. Players in some states can add Power Play, which allows players to increase the payout of their winning numbers for an additional dollar. Alternatively, players can add Double Play for an extra dollar, which allows players to use their numbers in a second, concurrent drawing with a different prize pool. The official cutoff for ticket sales is 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time, though some lotteries cut off sales earlier.
Understanding the Steep Odds of Winning
Players have a 1 in 292,201,338 chance of winning the jackpot per play, by matching five white balls from 69 and one red Powerball from 26, according to Powerball online. According to Powerball.com, players have a 1 in 292.2 million chance to match all six numbers whether the jackpot is $20 million or $2 billion. Powerball’s minimum jackpot starts at $20 million annuity. Prizes range from two dollars to the grand prize jackpot, which varies. Powerball was the first lottery game to use a two-drum concept, suggested by Steve Caputo of the Oregon Lottery. Using two drums to draw numbers from offers more manipulation of the probabilities by simultaneously allowing low jackpot odds, numerous prize levels, and high overall odds of winning. The two-drum concept has since been used by The Big Game in the U.S., Australia’s Powerball, Thunderball in the U.K., Eurojackpot, and EuroMillions.
History of the Game and Payout Structures
Powerball’s predecessor began in 1988 when the multi-state game was known as Lotto America. The game, and name, were changed to Powerball on April 19, 1992, and its first drawing was held April 22. Through 2008, Powerball drawings usually were held at Screenscape Studios in West Des Moines, Iowa. Winners have a choice between an annuity paid in 30 graduated installments over 29 years increasing 5% annually, or a lump-sum cash prize worth about half of the advertised jackpot paid all at once, although in the U.K. only an annuity is provided. Powerball is known for producing some of the largest lottery jackpots in history, including the record-breaking $2.04 billion jackpot won by Edwin Castro.
Recent Winners and Ticket-Buying Trends
Powerball reset to $20 million on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, after a player in Quincy, Illinois, won an epic $1.04 billion jackpot on Wednesday, Aug. 12. The Illinois Lottery reported the winner took the cash option of $450.0 million and elected to remain anonymous. Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh, located at 310 N. 36th St. in Quincy, Illinois, sold the winning ticket and received a $500,000 bonus commission. Though the Wednesday drawing resulted in a rollover, it was not all bad news for all participants. Two tickets purchased in Ohio and Pennsylvania matched five numbers plus the Power Play to win $2 million each, and a ticket from New Jersey matched five numbers to win $1 million, according to Powerball online. Additionally, a ticketholder who lives in Cape Coral, Florida, matched five numbers for $1 million after buying their ticket from Racetrac at 2335 Cleveland Ave. in Fort Myers, Florida, and claimed the cash, according to state lottery records.
Claiming Prizes And Anonymity
According to Florida Lottery’s website, winners cannot remain anonymous, as stated on the website. However, the Illinois Lottery reported the $1.04 billion jackpot winner took the cash option of $450.0 million and elected to remain anonymous. Prizes for Florida Lottery must be claimed within 180 days (six months) from the date of the drawing. To claim a single-payment cash option, a winner has the first 60 days after the applicable draw date to claim it.
The process of claiming prizes may vary depending on the state where the ticket was purchased. For instance, the winner of the $1 million ticket from Florida claimed the cash, as shown in state lottery records, after buying their ticket from Racetrac in Fort Myers, Florida.
Prize Levels and Secondary Drawings
While the headline odds of 1 in 292,201,338 apply specifically to matching all six numbers, the two-drum design creates a broader range of winning possibilities. A ticket can win a prize by matching only one number, contributing to high overall odds of winning despite the low probability of hitting the jackpot. This structure allows for numerous prize levels between the two-dollar minimum and the grand prize.
Players in participating states may also add Double Play for an extra dollar. This option allows players to use their numbers in a second, concurrent drawing with a different prize pool. Similarly, the Power Play add-on increases the payout of winning numbers for an additional dollar. These features provide additional avenues for winning beyond the primary jackpot drawing.
Evolution of the Two-Drum Drawing System
When Powerball launched in 1992, it became the first lottery game to utilize a two-drum concept. This mechanical innovation was suggested by Steve Caputo of the Oregon Lottery. By drawing numbers from two separate drums, the game allows for greater manipulation of probabilities, simultaneously facilitating low jackpot odds alongside numerous prize levels and high overall odds of winning.
This distinct two-drum format has since been adopted by several other major lottery games globally. Notable examples include The Big Game—now known as Mega Millions—in the United States, as well as Australia’s Powerball and the United Kingdom’s Thunderball. The system has also been implemented by international games such as Eurojackpot and EuroMillions, standardizing a method that balances the difficulty of hitting the grand prize with the frequency of smaller winning outcomes.
