Inside the Expanding Lineup of BYD Electric Vehicles Headed Overseas

Chinese automotive giant BYD is preparing to take its upcoming Rolls-Royce-like flagship electric sedan overseas, marking another step in the company’s rapid international expansion. According to reports from the automaker, the new vehicle will serve as the crowning achievement of a diverse portfolio that now spans from entry-level city hatchbacks to ultra-luxury sedans and high-performance SUVs.

From Affordable Hatchbacks to Elite Flagships

While the manufacturer is globally recognized for low-cost electric cars like the Seagull hatchback, which sells for under $10,000 in China according to company data, the firm has greatly expanded its lineup over recent years. Today, BYD manufactures everything from entry-level battery electric vehicles to three-row flagship SUVs, pickup trucks, and electric supercars. According to company records, BYD Auto was established in January 2003 after founder Wang Chuanfu acquired Xi’an Qinchuan Automobile. The business transitioned exclusively to new energy vehicles, encompassing both battery electric models and plug-in hybrids, by ending production of internal combustion engines in 2022.

The vast manufacturing operation is structured around several distinct families and high-end divisions. The core offerings are divided into the Dynasty and Ocean series under the main BYD brand, while the higher-end market is served by three specific sub-brands: Denza, FangChengBao, and Yangwang. According to industry statistics, BYD surpassed Volkswagen to become the best-selling car brand in China in 2023 and overtook Tesla to become the world’s largest electric carmaker in 2025.

The Ultra-Luxury Yangwang Lineup

Sitting at the absolute top of the brand hierarchy is the Yangwang division, which showcases the company’s most advanced technologies. Yangwang models initially debuted on a quad-motor e4 platform that delivers 1,300 horsepower and features the DiSus-X intelligent body control system, allowing vehicles to jump, dance, and drive on three wheels according to company specifications. The current Yangwang catalog includes the U7 electric sedan, the U9 fully electric super-coupe, and the U8 luxury off-road plug-in hybrid SUV, alongside its extended variant, the U8L, which starts at 1.45 million yuan or about $217,000.

The division is now preparing to launch its largest and most luxurious electric sedan, which features a shape and size similar to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class or Rolls-Royce Phantom. Local reports cited by industry analysts indicate the new executive sedan will measure around 5,500 mm in length. According to Yangwang general manager Hu Xiaoqing, the global launch for this flagship model will take place in the United Arab Emirates. Yangwang executive general manager Zheng Yu stated that the vehicle will feature unprecedented disruptive technology, and company disclosures indicate it will be the first model to feature BYD’s solid-state batteries, with executive vice president Stella Li confirming that solid-state integration will debut broadly in 2027.

Expanding SUV Portfolios and Advanced Tech

Beyond the elite sedan segment, BYD is refreshing its core utility vehicle offerings with advanced technological systems. According to filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the third-generation Tang EV is a tech-savvy five-seat flagship SUV measuring 5,045 mm long with a 2,950 mm wheelbase. The vehicle utilizes a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain where the front electric motor produces 288 horsepower and the rear delivers 402 horsepower, giving a combined output of 690 horsepower.

According to regulatory disclosures, the third-generation Tang EV relies on a lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by Wuwei Fudi Battery Co. The vehicle is designed to utilize BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging technology, which enables a charge from ten percent to seventy percent in just five minutes. Inside the cabin, Lu Tian, General Manager of the Dynasty lineup, revealed that the vehicle features a stretched 35.4-inch integrated display alongside a 30-inch panoramic screen, complemented by the DiSus-A intelligent body control system and the God’s Eye B advanced driving assistance system.

Denza and FangChengBao Expanding BYD’s Market Reach

While Yangwang targets the ultra-luxury segment, BYD’s other sub-brands are strategically positioned to capture different market tiers. Denza, co-developed with Mercedes-Benz, focuses on premium intelligent electric vehicles aimed at younger consumers seeking sophisticated technology and design. The brand’s flagship model, the Denza Z, combines performance with smart connectivity features, reflecting BYD’s commitment to innovation across all market segments.

FangChengBao, meaning “Square City” in Chinese, represents BYD’s approach to rugged yet refined electric vehicles. Positioned between mainstream and luxury offerings, the brand emphasizes off-road capability and outdoor lifestyle appeal. Its debut model, the FangChengBao FT, showcases BYD’s expertise in electric powertrain technology while catering to consumers who prioritize versatility and adventure-ready performance.

These sub-brands demonstrate BYD’s comprehensive strategy to dominate multiple automotive segments simultaneously. By leveraging shared platforms and technologies while maintaining distinct brand identities, BYD ensures that each division can compete effectively within its respective market tier, from affordable transportation to elite luxury experiences.

Core Product Series And Technology Integration

BYD’s main brand is structured around the Dynasty and Ocean series, which offer a range of vehicles from entry-level to high-end models. The Dynasty series, led by General Manager Lu Tian, has recently revealed the third-generation Tang EV, a tech-savvy five-seat flagship SUV with dual electric motors delivering 690 horsepower.

The Tang EV features advanced technology, including BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging technology, enabling it to charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. It also comes with a stretched 35.4-inch integrated display and a 30-inch panoramic screen, showcasing the company’s commitment to integrating innovative technologies into its core product series.

Advanced Battery Technology Integration

BYD’s commitment to innovative battery solutions is evident in its upcoming models, including the new flagship electric sedan, which will feature the company’s solid-state batteries, according to executive vice president Stella Li. This technology is expected to debut broadly in 2027, marking a significant milestone in the company’s pursuit of advanced battery solutions.

The use of solid-state batteries is expected to enhance the performance and safety of BYD’s vehicles, and the company’s investment in this technology demonstrates its focus on staying at the forefront of the electric vehicle industry. With its subsidiary FinDreams Battery being the world’s second-largest producer of electric vehicle batteries, BYD is well-positioned to drive innovation in battery technology.
