WOLFSBURG, October 22, 2026 — Volkswagen is set to launch its most affordable electric vehicle in 2027, with a starting price of around €20,000. This new model, derived from the ID. EVERY1 concept, aims to capture the European city car market by undercutting current entry-level prices.
A New Entry Point for the Mass Market
The shift is clear. Volkswagen Group is responding to the aggressive pricing strategies of Chinese automakers, particularly BYD, by introducing a new lineup of compact, entry-level electric cars. This “Electric Urban Car Family” currently includes the Volkswagen ID. Polo, ID. Cross, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq. All these models are built on the shared MEB+ platform.
Following the recent launch of base versions of the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, priced from €24,995 and €27,995 respectively, Volkswagen is preparing to introduce an even smaller and cheaper option. The production version of the ID. EVERY1 concept, which was revealed in March 2025, is expected to go on sale next year. It is anticipated to be marketed under the name ID. Up!.
Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer described the model as “the last piece of the puzzle.” His statement highlights the company’s goal to offer the widest possible selection of vehicles in the mainstream segment. By targeting a price point near €20,000, Volkswagen aims to make electric mobility accessible to a broader range of private buyers, small businesses, and fleet managers who have previously hesitated due to cost barriers.
Specs That Fit the City
The car measures 3,880 mm in length. This places it between the former Up!, which measured 3,600 mm, and the ID. Polo, which is 4,053 mm long. Despite its compact dimensions, Volkswagen promises space for four passengers and a luggage compartment volume of 305 liters.
Under the hood, the vehicle is expected to use the same 37 kWh LFP battery as the base ID. Polo and ID. Cross. This choice helps keep production costs down. For context, the ID. Polo with this 37 kWh battery offers a WLTP range of up to 334 km. Volkswagen has confirmed that the new model will offer at least 250 km of range.
Power will come from a new 70 kW (94 hp) electric motor. This setup enables a top speed of 130 km/h. While these figures may not thrill performance enthusiasts, they are sufficient for urban commuting and short highway trips. The focus here is on practicality and affordability rather than speed.
Production and Competitive Context
Production of the ID. EVERY1 is expected to take place in Spain, although Volkswagen has not officially confirmed the specific site. Spanish auto magazine Autofácil reported that the €20,000 EV could be manufactured there. The Volkswagen Group currently produces the ID. Polo and Cupra Raval at its Martorell plant, while the ID. Cross and Skoda Epiq are built at the Navarra plant. Both facilities are located in Spain.
This new model is part of a broader strategy. Volkswagen plans to launch nine new models by 2027. The ID. EVERY1 will be one of them. The Electric Urban Car Family has already secured nearly 150,000 orders since series production began in June. This early success suggests strong demand for affordable electric options in Europe.
However, the competitive landscape is crowded. Buyers in Europe now have numerous choices, including the BYD Seagull and the Renault 5. These rivals offer similar price points and features. Volkswagen must hold its price target to remain competitive. The €20,000 figure is a target, not a confirmed sticker price. Volkswagen has not yet published a final production name, exact battery capacity, or precise retail price.
What’s Changing in the EV Market
The trend underneath this launch is the normalization of low-cost electric vehicles. Price was the main barrier to EV adoption in the small-car class. Buyers of city cars rarely tolerate a large premium over petrol equivalents. By targeting around €20,000, Volkswagen is aligning its pricing with what private buyers and fleet managers can compare directly with combustion hatchbacks.
This move signals a shift in how major European automakers approach the volume segment. It is no longer just about premium models or long-range crossovers. The focus is expanding to include the everyday commuter. Watch this space, as the next year will reveal whether Volkswagen can deliver on this price promise while maintaining quality.
It is worth noting that this model will not be available in the US market. Instead, Volkswagen is launching the ID. Tiguan in 2027 as a replacement for the ID.4. The ID. EVERY1 is specifically designed for the European market, reflecting the region’s dense urban environments and higher demand for compact vehicles.
For consumers, the arrival of the ID. EVERY1 means more options at the entry level. It forces competitors to sharpen their pencils. The battle for the affordable EV market is heating up, and Volkswagen is bringing a significant new player to the table. As the 2027 launch approaches, details will emerge regarding final pricing and specifications. Until then, the €20,000 target remains a key benchmark for the industry.
