Scottish fans greet World Cup returnees with Tennent’s and Irn Bru

GLASGOW — The numbers tell two stories. Three weeks. One World Cup.

Zero wins in the knockout stage. A resignation.

And a tray of Tennent’s Lager and Irn Bru waiting at arrivals. Rowan Stevenson, 19, met his brother Rory’s flight from New York with the tactical resupply. The reason: American beer.

“The boys had been complaining about the beer in America so I thought I’d give them a nice Scottish welcome,” he said. The resupply was for troops in need of reintegration.

“They’ve had the time of their lives but I thought they might need a bit of help to re-integrate themselves.” Rory Stevenson, 21, and his pal Callum Hand, also 21, just graduated from Edinburgh University. Degrees in finance and economics. Their World Cup odyssey cost a pretty penny — saved cash they believe was well spent.

The trip was a graduation blow-out. “This was a bit of a blow-out but we decided to treat it as one big graduation party,” Callum said. The timing matters.

Leave university. Fly to a World Cup.

Come home to job applications. It is a generation marking a transition before the job market beckons. Rory called the trip “unbelievable, just one long party to be honest, but it has been an incredible experience.” He added: “We did moan a bit about the beer out there so it was nice of Rowan to think of us like that.” Two graduates.

One tray of drinks. Three weeks of party.

The numbers are small. The story is bigger. Under the hood of the celebration lies the sting of defeat.

Scotland lost their commander in chief — manager Steve Clarke — who resigned after the team’s exit. The Tartan Army foot soldiers touched down Monday, swapping party heads for the grim reality of work and laundry. The hangover had begun.

Callum Hand framed the trip as a graduation blow-out. That framing matters.

It is not just a football trip. It is a rite of passage. A pause before the job market.

A last hurrah before spreadsheets and loan payments. The three weeks cost a pretty penny.

Saved cash. Well spent, they believe. The World Cup ride ended in bitter defeat.

The commander in chief resigned. The foot soldiers came home. Some had degrees.

Some had debt. All had memories.

Rowan Stevenson waited with the tray. He knew the boys would need help. “They’ve had the time of their lives but I thought they might need a bit of help to re-integrate themselves,” he said.

The reintegration is technical. Work.

Laundry. The job market. The numbers are concrete.

Three weeks. Two graduates. One tray.

One resignation. Zero wins after the group stage.

A generation marking a transition. The Tartan Army foot soldiers are home. The party is over.

The hangover is real. The job market beckons.

The tray of Tennent’s and Irn Bru is a small mercy. A tactical resupply. A Scottish welcome.

Rory Stevenson and Callum Hand will soon be looking for work. Finance and economics degrees in hand. World Cup memories in their heads.

The trip cost a pretty penny. They believe it was well spent.

The job market will test that belief. For now, they have the tray. They have the hangover.

They have the sting of defeat. They have the resignation of their commander in chief.

They have the graduation party that was a World Cup ride. The numbers are small. The story is big.

Two graduates. One tray. Three weeks.

A generation marking a transition. The job market beckons.

The hangover has begun.
