MG ZS Surpasses 999,000 Units Sold Globally So Far Successfully

By 15 December 2023, SAIC Motor reported that 999 612 examples of the MG ZS – the sub‑compact crossover marketed under the historic British MG badge – had been delivered across international markets. The tally combines sales of the conventional‑fuel version and the battery‑electric model, underscoring the effectiveness of the brand’s dual‑power‑train approach.

First unveiled at the 2016 Guangzhou Auto Show, the ZS slots between the larger MG HS and the smaller MG 3 hatchback. Its positioning proved profitable, and SAIC, the state‑owned Chinese manufacturer behind MG, leveraged the British nameplate to launch a Chinese‑built compact SUV on a global stage.

The electric variant, known as the ZS EV (or EZS in China), entered the market in 2018 – an early move for a mass‑market electric crossover. SAIC’s strategy targeted customers seeking a compact, affordable, zero‑emission vehicle, a bet that paid off as emissions regulations tightened worldwide. The EV version helped MG gain a foothold in regions such as Europe, where restrictions on petrol cars are increasing.

Flexibility is a hallmark of the ZS platform. It supports petrol, electric and hybrid powertrains, a rarity in a segment where many models are locked to a single fuel type. The hybrid iteration earned Carbuyer’s “Best Hybrid Car” award in 2025, highlighting the platform’s adaptability.

The near‑million‑unit milestone signals that the sub‑compact crossover segment is a global phenomenon, not merely a China‑centric trend. Buyers in Europe, Southeast Asia, South America and Australia are all gravitating toward a small, tall vehicle that offers practicality without a premium price tag. The ZS delivers that proposition without the flash of a luxury model, answering a straightforward demand for economical transport of people and cargo.

SAIC’s broader strategy of revitalising legacy British marques – MG, LDV and Morris Garages – has found its most successful expression in the ZS. The model demonstrates that Chinese production, paired with a recognized Western badge, can challenge Japanese and Korean competitors in their own markets.

Although the reported figure stops just shy of a clean million, the next thousand units will push the ZS over that psychological barrier. Reaching a million sales would cement the model’s credibility with dealers, suppliers and consumers, confirming it as a lasting presence rather than a fleeting trend.

Current market dynamics favour the ZS’s outlook. Demand for compact crossovers remains robust, while interest in electric and hybrid variants continues to climb. SAIC possesses the necessary platform, manufacturing capacity and distribution network to sustain growth, though the pace of scaling the electric and hybrid mix will determine future composition. Petrol‑driven ZS models still dominate the sales total, but the shift toward electrified versions is evident.

In essence, the MG ZS has become the cornerstone of MG’s resurgence on the world stage, proving that a Chinese‑owned British brand can achieve volume sales outside its home market. The model’s success is drawing attention from other Chinese automakers, many of which aim to emulate SAIC’s formula, albeit with a developmental lag of several years.
