MUNICH — The numbers that put Harry Kane in the conversation with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo did not appear from nowhere. They trace back to a decision two years ago that reshaped his career. Kane left Tottenham Hotspur in 2024.

He had spent nearly two decades at the north London club. He left because he wanted trophies.

Bayern Munich offered him a path. The move was not universally popular. Some questioned whether a 30-year-old striker could adapt to the Bundesliga.

Others wondered if he would ever match the goal tallies he posted in the Premier League. Those questions have answers now.

Kane scored 61 club goals in the 2025/26 season. He added seven assists in 51 games. The last player to hit that mark in all competitions was Ronaldo for Real Madrid in 2014/15.

Kane also won the European Golden Shoe for the second time. Only Messi, with six, and Ronaldo, with four, have more. That is the company he keeps.

The trophy case filled fast. Three this season alone: the German Super Cup, the Bundesliga, the DFB Pokal.

A clean sweep of domestic honors. That was the point of leaving Tottenham. Now Barcelona want him.

LaLiga’s biggest club is reportedly exploring how to finance a deal. But the story has a different shape than it might have a year ago.

Sky Sports News reported Monday that Kane and his family are very happy in Munich. Both the player and the club are relaxed about his contract situation, even though only one year remains on his current deal. A new contract is expected.

That is the direction of travel. Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, put it bluntly. “I can see why Barcelona would want him.

I can see why any club in the world would want him that is trying to win trophies at an elite level. Harry Kane is as reliable as you can get.

In football and in life, you want reliability. You want players who you know are going to deliver for you. He does that.

I describe him as gold.” Kane’s current focus is on England at the World Cup. He doubled England’s lead against Panama in their final Group L match.

That was his 70th goal this season for club and country. Any contract talks will wait until after the tournament. That is the plan.

The Barcelona interest is real. But it arrives late. Kane already found what he was looking for.

The trophies came. The goals kept coming.

The family settled. The club wants to keep him. The player is not pushing for a move.

This is a different story than the one that played out in 2024. Then, Kane was chasing validation.

He needed to prove he could win. He needed to show he could score at the highest level in a new league. He did both.

Now Barcelona is chasing a player who already has what they are offering. The numbers tell the story. Kane registered his 70th goal this season by scoring against Panama.

That is a season total that puts him in a category with Messi and Ronaldo. That is why Barcelona is interested.

That is also why Bayern is not worried. The contract situation is calm. The player is happy.

The goals keep going in. Barcelona can explore financing all they want.

Kane is likely to stay.
