LONDON, Sept. 9 — The Championship has long been called football’s most unforgiving grind, a 46-game slog where the Premier League dream usually dies a slow death. This season, the math has changed. Six play-off places are on offer instead of four, and for all 24 clubs the path to the top flight suddenly feels wider.
The campaign began on Friday, August 14, and runs until Saturday, May 1, 2027, with the play-off final set for Saturday, May 29. For those chasing promotion, the new structure is the story of the year.
For the rest, it is a reason to believe. September’s triple gameweek is the first real test of squad depth. On Tuesday, September 8, eight matches were scheduled, including Blackburn Rovers against Sheffield United, Cardiff City against Stoke City, Southampton against Swansea City, Watford against Preston North End, and Wrexham against Burnley, all kicking off at 7:45pm on Sky Sports+.
Bolton Wanderers met West Ham United at 8pm on Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Football, and Sky Sports Ultra HD. Wednesday, September 9 brings Derby County against West Brom and Norwich City against Birmingham City, both at 7:45pm on Sky Sports+, with Charlton Athletic hosting QPR at 8pm on the main Sky channels.
The sheer volume of live football is a logistical feat in itself, and for supporters the schedule is a fixture-planning exercise before a ball is even kicked. The weekend slate offers its own marquee moments. Friday, September 11 sees West Ham United host Wrexham at 8pm, with three simultaneous 12:30pm kick-offs on Saturday, September 12: Bolton Wanderers against Cardiff City and West Brom against QPR on Sky Sports+, and Derby County against Birmingham City on Sky Sports Football.
Sunday, September 13 closes the round with Sheffield United against Wolves at 12pm. Coverage this season is split across Sky Sports, Sky Sports+, and Sky Sports Main Event, with select matches also on ITV1, STV, and their streaming platforms ITVX and STV Player. The broadcasters have spread the love, too.
Millwall against West Ham United on Saturday, September 19 at 12:30pm will be shown across ITV1, STV, Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Football, Sky Sports Ultra HD, ITVX, and STV Player. Southampton against Portsmouth on Sunday, October 11 at 12pm is another ITV1/STV/Sky Sports Football pick.
Derby days remain the heartbeat of the calendar. Burnley host Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, November 22 at 12pm on ITV1/STV/Sky Sports Football, a fixture that needs no introduction and no build-up. Midweek rounds on October 13-14, November 3-4, and November 24 keep the autumn busy, with weekend fixtures running through late November.
All kick-off times are UK time and subject to change. For now, the fixture list is the promise.
Six spots, 24 clubs, and a season that begins to take shape this week.
