PSG borrows Barcelona’s “more than a club” slogan for commercial use

PSG borrows Barcelonas more than a club slogan for commercial use

The slogan on Paris Saint-Germain’s merchandise reads “more than a club.” That phrase was born in Barcelona in 1968. PSG’s chief marketing officer admitted the club borrowed it. PSG uses it to sell jerseys, not to declare political identity under a dictatorship.

The original was a stand against Franco. The copy is a commercial strategy.

No one at PSG has apologized. No regulator has objected. The club’s ownership, backed by Qatar Sports Investments since 2011, has not issued a statement of clarification.

The club continues to use the phrase on training gear and social media. Barcelona has not filed a formal complaint.

The record shows no legal action has been taken. The slogan, for now, remains in use on two continents by two clubs with two entirely different meanings. The borrowing extends beyond words.

PSG’s leadership looked at the New York Yankees cap — a baseball hat worn by people who do not watch baseball. They wanted that. So they signed a deal with Jordan Brand in 2018.

The Jumpman logo now sits next to the PSG crest on kits sold at premium prices. The strategy worked.

Commercial revenue grew. Retail stores opened in multiple countries. The club expanded into esports.

It invested in women’s football. None of that requires a political slogan.

But the slogan helps sell the story. Critics have pointed out the gap. Barcelona’s claim to be “more than a club” is rooted in decades of Catalan resistance.

PSG’s claim is rooted in a marketing meeting. The club’s own officials have confirmed the difference. The CMO said the PSG version means the club represents something bigger than football.

That is a business claim, not a political one. The Qatari takeover in 2011 changed everything.

Before that, PSG was a mid-tier French club with occasional success. After the takeover, money poured in. Star players arrived.

The brand went global. The slogan went with it.

The Yankees cap strategy went with it. The Jordan partnership went with it. The club now operates as a multinational lifestyle brand that happens to play football.

What authorities are doing about it: nothing public. The French football league has not commented. UEFA has not raised the issue.

The slogan is not trademarked in a way that blocks its use by another club. Barcelona has not issued a cease-and-desist.

The club’s membership has not demanded action. The slogan sits in a legal gray area — borrowed, not stolen; commercial, not political. PSG’s financial disclosures show the commercial revenue growth since 2011.

The club does not break down how much of that growth comes from the slogan itself. Marketing executives familiar with the strategy say the phrase is part of a broader push to make PSG a global fashion label, not just a football club.

The Yankees cap proved that a sports item can become a cultural symbol. PSG wants the same. The slogan is the pitch.

Whether Barcelona cares enough to act is unclear. The club has its own financial struggles. It has bigger problems than a borrowed phrase.

PSG keeps selling. The hats keep selling.

The slogan keeps printing. No one has stopped it. No one has tried.
