SACRAMENTO, October 17, 2026 — Governor Gavin Newsom announced that nearly 12,000 Californians have switched to electric vehicles through the state’s MyFirstEV rebate program, which provides instant discounts at the point of sale for first-time zero-emission vehicle buyers.
How the MyFirstEV Rebate Works
The program offers $3,500 off a new zero-emission vehicle with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price up to $50,000, and $1,750 off a used zero-emission vehicle sold for up to $25,000. Rebates are applied instantly at dealerships or through automaker direct sales, with no lengthy application process. According to the Governor’s Office, the initiative is open to any Californian purchasing their first ZEV.
Funding and Participation
MyFirstEV stems from a $135.5 million state investment, matched dollar-for-dollar by participating automakers, creating a combined $271 million in total savings for consumers. Participating manufacturers include Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, Toyota, Lucid, Nissan, Rivian, Subaru, and Volvo. The program launched in August 2026 through a partnership between the Governor’s office and the California Air Resources Board.
Impact on EV Adoption and Infrastructure
Zero-emission vehicles accounted for 19.1% of new car sales in California during the third quarter of 2026, and Californians have now purchased almost 2.8 million ZEVs to date. The state has installed 224,438 shared charging ports, nearly 50% of the 2030 goal of 478,000. Since 2021, California has invested nearly $6.6 billion in zero-emission vehicles and charging infrastructure, supporting more than 25,000 jobs in clean vehicle manufacturing and related sectors.
Broader Context and Next Steps
Building on MyFirstEV’s success, Toyota has launched MyNextEV and MyLexusEV, offering $2,500 off for prior EV owners purchasing eligible Toyota or Lexus electric vehicles. Drivers switching to electric save up to $2,000 per year on fuel costs, according to state data. The California Energy Commission’s latest assessment confirms continued growth in charging infrastructure, with fast charger installations increasing 221% since 2021.
Environmental and Health Benefits of the MyFirstEV Program
The MyFirstEV rebate program contributes to cleaner air and improved public health by reducing tailpipe emissions from transportation. As stated by Secretary for Environmental Protection Yana Garcia, Californians deserve a healthy environment and to breathe clean air, in addition to lower costs. The program supports the state’s broader goal of cutting harmful vehicle pollution and delivering cleaner air to communities across California.
According to California Air Resources Board Chair Lauren Sanchez, the early success of MyFirstEV is helping to supercharge progress in reducing harmful vehicle pollution despite federal interference. The initiative aligns with California’s commitment to protecting public health while advancing clean transportation, reinforcing the link between climate action and economic well-being.
Impact: Reducing Gas Dependence and Emissions Amid Trump-Era Fuel Price Spikes
By switching to electric vehicles through the MyFirstEV rebate program, nearly 12,000 Californians are no longer paying for Donald Trump’s reckless Iran war every time they fill up, avoiding the over $135 billion in extra fuel costs caused by the largest supply disruption in global oil market history.
These drivers are saving up to $2,000 per year on fuel costs alone by going electric, according to state data, while also eliminating tailpipe emissions that contribute to harmful vehicle pollution.
Despite federal interference and attempts to turn back the clock on clean vehicle progress, California continues to lead in zero-emission adoption, with ZEVs accounting for nearly one in five new cars sold in the state during the third quarter of 2026.
