Affordable Electric Cars Boost EU Sales: Clean Car Targets Drive Record Demand

BRUSSELS, October 6 — The European Union’s CO2 emissions standards for cars are driving a wave of affordable electric vehicle models, with sales of sub-€25,000 models set to rise sharply in 2026 compared to 2024. The standards are delivering record high electric car sales, bringing more affordable models to the market. Almost 40 new electric models were launched in the first half of 2026, taking the number of mass-market battery electric vehicles to over 150.

About 60 new models are expected by the end of 2026, nearly four times the average annual number over 2021-2025. The consumer demand for small, affordable EVs is finally addressed, resulting in a significant increase in sales of electric models below €25,000 in 2026 compared to 2024.

Market response and oil price impact

The oil crisis has further fueled the shift to electric cars, with Volkswagen’s ID. Polo quickly selling out, accumulating over 40,000 orders and a 10-month waitlist. The standards protect European drivers from Europe’s costly oil dependence and offer lower running costs.

Data shows a saving in running costs by mid-September 2026 compared to diesel cars, given the oil price shock. The EU’s clean car targets are crucial for Europe’s position in the global EV race, ensuring a diverse range of affordable electric cars for consumers.

Broader implications for Central Asia

Officials noted that the expansion of affordable EV models in Europe creates new opportunities for Central Asian battery material suppliers, particularly Kazakhstan’s nickel and cobalt producers, as European automakers seek secure supply chains. The company said that increased demand for battery components could boost regional mining exports, connecting Central Asian resource development directly to European EV manufacturing growth. This shift highlights how EU regulations influence global trade flows beyond the bloc’s borders.

Looking ahead, industry watchers will monitor whether other major economies adopt similar emissions standards to accelerate affordable EV access worldwide, potentially reshaping global automotive markets and resource demand patterns.
