Spain Set to Suspend Under-20 Match in Ceuta on Safety Request

MADRID, September 20 — The Spanish football federation is set to suspend a men’s under-20 friendly between Spain and Mexico that was scheduled to be played in Ceuta on September 30, after the Spanish interior ministry asked for the fixture to be moved, according to a report by The Athletic. The request was made on safety grounds, the report said, citing sources with knowledge of the situation who were not authorised to speak publicly.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation has not yet announced the suspension, but those sources indicated it is imminent. Replacement venues for the youth national teams are being explored.

The Athletic said it had contacted both the federation and the interior ministry for comment.

A city at the centre of a political argument

Ceuta is an autonomous Spanish city on the north coast of Africa, bordering Morocco. It has been a Spanish territory since the 16th century and was granted autonomous status in 1995. Its status is not recognised by Morocco, and the city has long been a point of contention in Spanish-Moroccan relations.

The immediate backdrop is the migrant crisis. An estimated 70,000 people entered Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco by land and sea over two days in late July, according to the report.

The Spanish government has deployed additional security forces to the area in response to the recent surge. A comparable influx occurred in May 2021, when thousands of migrants entered the city. Football has already been drawn into the dispute.

The Real Madrid team that faced Elche last week wore t-shirts in solidarity with the city, with Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Ibrahima Konate choosing not to fully participate. Ceuta then featured in the senior men’s squad announcement video, which used clips from head coach Luis de la Fuente’s recent visit.

“This trophy tells where we have come from and these players will decide where we go, the journey continues here — this is Ceuta, this is Spain,” de la Fuente said.

Sumar’s demand on the 2030 World Cup

The left-wing party Sumar has called on the Spanish federation to refuse to co-host the 2030 men’s World Cup finals with Morocco. Spain, Portugal and Morocco are the three co-hosts of that tournament. The party’s intervention places the World Cup hosting arrangement alongside the Ceuta dispute.

Ceuta’s second division side has continued to play its home games at the Alfonso Murube stadium in recent weeks. The government’s request concerns the youth national team fixture rather than those club matches.

What to watch next is whether the federation formally confirms the suspension and where the Spain Under-20 side and its Mexican counterparts are sent instead. The larger question — whether the political argument over Ceuta continues to reach into Spanish football, up to and including the 2030 World Cup — remains open.
