Lionel Messi: Argentina great retires from international football

BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 2 — The voice that carried Argentina through decades of football fell silent this week, and the quiet settled over the pitch like a slow, gray dusk. Lionel Messi, the 39-year-old captain, announced his retirement from international football in an Instagram statement on Monday.

The decision, he wrote, “hurts me deeply,” but “the time has come.” He said he has given everything to the national side and now has “nothing left to give.” The message was written on 21 July, two days after Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final to Spain. But the deeper wound was personal.

Messi said the recent death of his father, Jorge, who died at 68 following a long illness, made him “even more convinced than before” about stepping away. The words carry the weight of a man who has spent much of his life in the blue and white stripes.

A career measured in milestones

Messi’s Argentina story began in 2005, when he came on as a 63rd-minute substitute in a friendly win over Hungary. The debut lasted less than a minute — a red card after his elbow connected with full-back Vilmos Vanczak. It was an inauspicious start for a player who would go on to score 125 goals in 207 appearances, making him Argentina’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player.

The crowning moment came in Qatar in 2022, when he captained the side to World Cup glory. Two Copa America titles followed.

At the 2026 World Cup, he scored eight goals and registered four assists, pushing his career World Cup assists tally to 12 — ten of them in knockout rounds. No other player on record has more than eight total. His 21 World Cup goals place him second all-time, behind France’s Kylian Mbappe, and his international tally trails only Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

His final goal for Argentina was an equaliser against Egypt in this summer’s tournament. His final act was a loss.

A familiar farewell

This is not the first time Messi has walked away. In 2016, after a Copa America final defeat to Chile in which he missed a penalty in the shootout, he announced his retirement — then reversed the decision. This time, he insists, the chapter is closed.

His club career continues with Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami, where his contract runs through the end of the 2028 season. But the national team, he said, will now watch from the sidelines.

“Thank you for all the love over the past 20 years,” he wrote to supporters. “I’m going to miss hearing you from the pitch so much. Now I’ll be just one of you, always cheering and supporting from the sidelines.” For Argentina, the question now turns to who inherits the number 10.

The team that won in Qatar and reached another final this summer remains young and hungry. But the man who defined an era has placed the jersey down, and by nightfall in Buenos Aires, the mourning had already begun.
