Chinese Paralympic athletes celebrate on the podium with gold medals at the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympics closing ceremony.

The 2024 Summer Paralympics concluded in Paris on Sunday, with China securing the top position on the medal table for the sixth consecutive Games, a streak that began in 2004. The Chinese delegation amassed 94 gold medals and 221 total medals during the competition, which ran from August 28 to September 8.

Great Britain finished in second place with 49 gold medals and 124 total medals, while the United States claimed third with 36 golds and 105 total medals. These three nations have consistently occupied the top ranks of the Paralympic medal table over multiple Games, reflecting sustained investment in para-sport programs. The Paris 2024 Paralympics marked the first time the French capital hosted the Summer Paralympics. France had previously only hosted the 1992 Winter Paralympics in Tignes and Albertville.

The event featured 549 medal events across 22 sports and was governed by the International Paralympic Committee. Beyond the familiar names at the top, the Paris Games demonstrated an expanding global footprint for parasports.

Several nations, including Mauritius and Nepal, won their first-ever Paralympic medals in Paris. The specific sports in which these milestones were achieved were not disclosed, but the emergence of new medal-winning countries signals growth in the international reach of the Paralympic movement. The 2024 Paralympics were held in the same year and location as the 2024 Summer Olympics, a standard arrangement under the agreement between the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee.

This dual-host structure provided the Paralympics with a larger platform in Paris, as France hosted both major events during the same summer. The Paris Games marked a return to the normal four-year cycle after the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The disruption caused by the pandemic had posed significant challenges for athletes, including training interruptions, event cancellations, and qualification delays. The successful execution of Paris 2024 was therefore considered a notable achievement for many participants. China’s 94 gold medals represent a commanding lead over other nations.

Great Britain’s 49 golds placed them a distant second, while the United States followed with 36. The gap between the top three countries and the rest of the field remains substantial, with medal totals dropping off sharply below that tier.

Great Britain finished second for the tenth time, demonstrating remarkable consistency. The United States, historically strong in both Olympic and Paralympic competition, maintained its third-place position. Neither country narrowed the gap with China, but both held their respective ranks.

The entry of first-time medal winners from countries like Mauritius and Nepal indicates that the competitive landscape is gradually changing. More nations are fielding teams, and more athletes with disabilities are gaining access to training and competition opportunities.

The Paralympics continue to serve as an important platform for this growth, and the data from Paris 2024 suggests that platform is expanding.
